I need your ideas on a patio.

I was quoted about a little over a grand to do the side of my house with cement, I don't have that amount but I was thinking what other alternatives can I do? Ill do it my self with my boy friend and he has friends that do construction. Anyone have any idea as how I can make this look good, I don't want to step out onto dirt every time I walk out the door and drag mud in in the winter, thanks to all!! I'm open to all ideas!

I did a brick block patio over a sand base for our back yard patio myself. It has been in for over 20 years and still looks good and is very serviceable.
