Build photovoltaic panels into a satellite dish and make your own Solar Power Concentrator.

How to make Photovoltaic Panels, and build your own Solar Power Concentrator with solar panels in a satellite dish, our objective is to design, build and test these photovoltaic systems.

We have obtained an old satellite dish that has a diameter of 9 feet. We are modifying this dish to reflect the sun’s power back to the focal point and to have the dish track the sun from morning till night so the solar panel will always be directed to receive the maximum power. We plan to place a solar panel made up of 28 solar cells with an area of 80 or 100 square inches in the center of this dish near the focal point. Our calculations say that we can get a 100 to 1 or 50 to 1 concentration of solar power depending on the area of the collector.

We will record our progress on this Solar Power Concentrator Photovoltaic Panels in a satellite dish in our blog and document our process in a Solar Power Concentrator instruction manual. You can sign up for or newsletter and download our FREE instruction manual.

How to build photovoltaic cells.

I purchased and reviewed Earth 4 Energy and Home Made Energy eBooks on photovoltaic panels. They are well written and have good information on Solar Power and Solar Power Systems. They describe how to make solar cells work, how to build homemade solar panel systems and how to build solar panels yourself.

They have tips on how to find and get solar panel modules for free or if you can't get them for free, They have links to web sites where you can buy solar panel systems. They show how you can find cheap solar panel photovoltaic cells and buy them from eBay so you can also build solar panels yourself. You can figure from this how much does solar power cost.

They give good diagrams and illustrations on how to create solar panels and what components you need to make your solar panels kits. The illustrations show how to connect the solar cells together and how to solder and fasten them to a backboard.

Earth 4 Energy has one illustration on page 37 of their eBook that is confusing, they are trying to show how the solar cells are connected in series. If you follow this, it will tie all the cells together and you will not get any output. So disregard this illustration and study the other illustration as they are accurate and will give you a good functional solar panel modules.

Home Made Energy in "Step #3" shows how to connect 32 solar cells in series. This illustration can be misunderstood. They are also attempting to show how the how solar cells work and are connected in series.

I have an illustration on our website that will show you how to correctly wire solar cells in a series and a parallel configuration to build solar panels yourself. The top side of the solar cell which is typically blue-green in color is the cathode. The electrons are energized by the photons from the sun and this side has a negative charge. The back side of the solar cell which is typically a gray color is the anode and has a positive charge with respect to the blue-green side. Examine this illustration and you will see how to attach the solar cells together correctly for your photovoltaic panel.

Living off the grid

The shortage of power, the rapid consumption of non-renewable energy, the ever-increasing demand for power supply, the daily warnings about our environment are enough signs to tell us that it is time we do something.

So, what can we do? For starters, how about living off the grid? If I have startled you with that proposition, let me tell you that living off the grid not only helps the environment and helps save power; it also cuts down our electricity bill substantially. Now, that is a tangible benefit apart from all the good you will do to the world. Trust me, you will feel good doing this.

Let us first study the advantages of living off the grid.

. Reduced dependability on exhausting resources: Who wants to depend on public utilities all the time? Living off the grid helps you rely only on your resources and not the ones supplied by governments or corporations. How often have you cursed when faced with a power outage in the midst of some important work or a party? Would you not like to take charge of such factors affecting you life? With alternate power solutions such as photovoltaic panels, you can.

. Freedom of usage of naturally available resources: How would you feel when you do not have to pay for the power you use? Would not it be delightful to use as much power as you want without worrying about the electricity meter? You can make use of the abundant power available in the nature to light up your home and make your food. The solar power solutions and the wind power solutions are the answers to your power quest (well, literally!).

. Reduced power costs, helping save your money: How would you feel if the electricity bills stop coming in your letter box? The alternate power solutions give you a return on investment very soon, thus making the power supply to your home eventually free!

. Making way for a healthier environment: Do you not bless the people who planted trees years ago not expecting them to miraculously grow? They planted those trees for the future generations. Make the future of your future generations secure by giving them a greener, healthier world. Cut down on the usage of non-renewable sources of energy. Try to use water minimally. There is not much drinking water left for the next generations.

If you are thinking it is not very feasible to live off the grid, look for alternate power solutions and you will be surprised to learn that they are not only cost-effective but also extremely feasible.
