A good koi pond design gives peace and tranquility

This koi pond design was done after I visited Japan a number of times and saw their japanese landscape art style coy pond. The pond design has three ponds, the bottom pond is the largest and holds about a 2000 gallons of water. The middle pond has a pond waterfall from the upper pond and a large circular spill way into the bottom pond. The upper pond plants are water hyacinths that filter and clean the koi pond water.

These plants grow very fast during the summer months, and they keep the water very clean. The pump runs five times per day for about an hour each time. This circulates the water through the water hyacinths filter and the water falls aerate the water for the Koi. The Koi use up the oxygen very fast in the heat of the summer, if you see them at the surface gulping air, you need to increase the time the pump runs to keep plenty of oxygen in the water.

Koi pond maintenance needs to be done each spring before the water hyacinths start to grow. They die back in the winter time and have many dead leaves. I have a 3 foot by 4 foot by 8 inch deep plastic tub that i use to mix cement. This tub will float on the water and I pull the dead leaves off the water hyacinths and drop them in the tub. I also thin the plants as they will quickly grow back and fill the upper Koi pond. I moved all the water hyacinths to the middle pond temporarily so that the upper pond could be cleaned thoroughly and checked for cracks. I do have a leak in the upper pond and I think it is around the edge of the upper wall.

The upper Koi pond filters design has a drain tube which is opened and the waste water is drained out to our pomegranate tree. Make sure you do this on a hot day as the waste water will quickly dry off so it doesn't smell bad for too long. I use a garden hose with a spray nozzle to loosen up the muck and to clear the drain pipe when it gets plugged, and it will get plugged.

After I repair the upper pond, I will refill this pond directly and let the water set for two to three days, if I have added new cement, I will add a little mercuric acid, the acid you use to clean the walls of your swimming pool and drain this water out. Then refill the pond again and let it sit for two to three days again to let the chlorine evaporate.
You can have goldfish for ponds but for a japanese landscape art style coy pond, you should stock your pond with the more colorful Koi fish.

I find it is very soothing and relaxing to sit beside the pond listening to the water tumble down a small water fall. The dragon flies are darting in and around shrubs and plants, crickets are chirping, bees are buzzing and humming birds are flittering around. I can sit for hours in a lounge chair listening and watching this while the koi swim lazily around in the pond.

The water lilies have large pink and red blossoms and the water is crystal clear.

I have about 6 water lily plants in there and they cover almost all the pond in the summer time. They die off in the fall back to their roots and re-grow in the spring as the days get longer and warmer.

I have about 40 koi in the pond, it is hard to get an accurate count as they never stop swimming. I purchase small koi 2 to 3 inches long and place them in the pond. They will grow to over 10 inches long.
